D.I.F.D. supports programs and initiatives aimed at transforming youth mental health.
Christie Lake Kids Canoe for Kids
Canoe for Kids is an annual friend-to-friend fundraiser and canoe race that puts the fun in fundraising! Teams of paddlers come together with a wide array of skill and costumes to race and raise much needed dollars for the programs of Christie Lake Kids.
Christie Lake Kids creates opportunities for economically disadvantaged children and youth in Ottawa that changes the trajectory of their young lives through sport, arts, camp, mentoring and leadership programming that recognizes their needs, supports and challenges them. In Christie Lake programs, there are no mandatory fees, all equipment and transportation is provided and basics like shoes and food never get in the way of a child’s enjoyment of learning, playing and building their personal tool box! Christie Lake makes sure that every child has the best opportunity to succeed by using a method called “Active Pursuit”. This means that prior to every program day, the team contacts every child to ensure that they feel welcome and to help remove obstacles to participation.
CHEO Foundation Big Steps Program
Big Steps is the biggest and most important fundraising campaign ever undertaken by the CHEO Foundation in support of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. The CHEO Research Institute is the daily setting for cutting edge work focused on curing paediatric diseases and improving health care outcomes. With the funding sought through the Big Steps Campaign, CHEO will invest $15 million to attract more leading researchers to our team of world-class minds, and increase our efforts in four key areas of childhood and youth health research.
Advisors from ScotiaMcLeod Kanata and ScotiaMcLeod Ottawa, together with Scotiabank, raised $250,00 for the Big Steps Program investment in Youth Mental Health, triggering a $250,000 match donation from the CHEO Foundation.
CHEO is already firmly established as a Centre for Excellence in Child and Youth mental health research and care. With added support from the BIG STEPS Campaign, CHEO will recruit a world leading mental researcher who shall lead and continue to expand the CHEO mental health team. This shall enable a focus on the translation of research results to the broader community, integrating new knowledge into clinical practice and mental health service delivery.
